New golf course at Kingsbarns
The St Andrews Citizen, 4 August 2000
The sun shone on the official opening of Kingsbarns Golf
Course on Saturday.
The opening, which included a champagne reception and fun
golf tournament, was designed as a thank-you to all those involved in getting
the project off the ground.
Captain of the R&A, Sir Michael Bonallack, hit the
first official shot to open the new course, after which 26 teams of golfers
teed off in the brilliant sunshine.
During the following prize-giving ceremony at the
clubhouse, Managing Director, Mr Mark Parsinen and Director Mr Art Dunkley,
presented the men responsible for the project in its earliest days, Mr Gordon
Begg and Lord Taylor, with an engraved decanter as a token of thanks.
The course first opened for play during the week of the
Open Championship when 1500 golfers availed themselves of the facilities.
Among them were many big golfing names, including Peter
Thomson, Gary Player, Bob Charles, Jerry Pate, Jim Furyk, Duffy Waldorf and Tom
Watson.
Director of Golf, David Scott, said the responses from
players had been extremely positive. more
