Silence over Fairmont

The Courier, 1 February 2008

The developer behind multi-million-pound expansion plans for the Fairmont St Andrews golf, hotel and leisure complex was yesterday remaining silent in the wake of the scheme being thrown out by councillors in north-east Fife.

The decision, made by an overwhelming 10-2 majority of the committee, came after a lengthy debate during which the design of the scheme was heavily criticised and questions were raised over water supplies, landscape impact, and the suggestion that the buildings could be screened.

The application from St Andrews Bay Development Ltd, was for 37 two and three-bedroomed holiday lodges, 20 holiday apartments, 14 themed suites, a public house, bistro, restaurant and spa.

The development would be partly new build, and partly redevelopment of a steading.

During the lengthy planning process which led up to this week's meeting it was revealed that the complex - which is owned by a US real estate fund and operated by Fairmont - is carrying forward losses of over £14 million.

At that time, just a few weeks ago in November, the operators Fairmont described the the planning application for the 37-lodges development as "an important strand of future growth and profitability."

A spokesperson said the development, if approved, would place Fairmont in an even stronger competitive position to attract additional income for the resort and local area.

"In addition to enhancing our facilities and attracting new visitors, the development will enable us to strongly grow our presence in the thriving conference market where we are currently having to turn away business due to a lack of capacity.

"The investor suites will also play a vital role in delivering additional income," the spokesperson had said.

After the meeting The Courier attempted to obtain comment from Fairmont, and to find out if an appeal is to be lodged.

Yesterday the hotel had still not responded to the request.
