Golf ball danger

Gordon Christie, Letter to Editor, East Fife Mail, 25 March 1998

Sir, - Today whilst parked at the children’s play area at Leven beach, by the paddling pool, the back window of my car was totally shattered, showering my family with fragments of glass. This was caused by a misplaced golf ball. My 13-month-old niece was left screaming and covered in glass.

On challenging the gentleman responsible, I was informed that, and I quote: “It happens all the time.” This is not acceptable. There are no warning signs posted, or any road markings informing you of any possible danger. The fact that is most worrying is that the children’s play area was directly outside the car, the worse scenario being a child being seriously injured.

With hindsight, I wish I had contacted the police. However, 1 have now had to go to great expense to replace my rear window due to no fault of my own.

One last point I would like to bring to your attention was another comment the golfer made, and I quote: “You can try and sue me or take me to court.”

The blase attitude of this gentleman gave me great concern. I would have expected more from someone who had smashed the window of a car with a young child in the back seat.
