Dredge is smoking in Dunhill
Welshman rules supreme with a 68 at Kingsbarns
South Wales Echo, 30 September 2005
Cardiff's Bradley Dredge stayed well on course to bolster
his £562,000 season on the European Tour with a sparkling opening round
to his Dunhill Links Championship bid.
The former Echo columnist fired a four-under-par 68 - the
joint best score of the day at Kingsbarns - to trail Italy's Alessandro Tadini,
American Rich Beem and Swindon's David Howell by one shot.
They carded their 67s at Carnoustie - the Open Championship
course which Dredge tackles today.
Also at Kingsbarns yesterday was Monmouth's David Park, who
also put himself in line for a good share of the £2.7m pot with a two
under par 70.
Church Village born Jamie Donaldson fired a level par 72 at
St Andrews while Mountain Ash's Stuart Manley, playing with England cricket
captain Michael Vaughan in the Pro-Am event, was level par around
Kingsbarns.
Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam, paired with great friend Ian
Botham, also had a good day being two under par at Carnoustie.
Barry's Stephen Dodd, who forged an unlikely alliance with
former American Vice President Dan Quayle went into his second round at St
Andrews today level par after his 72 at Carnoustie.
In the team section an 11-under-par better-ball of 61 from
South African Des Terblanche and Brand de Villiers gave them a one-shot lead.
Former Olympic gold medallist Jonathan Edwards, playing with Kenneth Ferrie, is
only three behind and Sir Bobby Charlton just one further back partnering David
Lynn.
