Dunhill set for Monday finish
BBC News, 20 October 2001
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is likely to end on
Monday after fog and rain interrupted Saturday's third round.
Bad weather has severely affected the first three days of
the £3.5m pro-am event.
The three host courses - St Andrews, Carnoustie and
Kingsbarns - have been forced to suspend play for long periods.
"Our overriding objective is to complete four rounds and
that means playing Monday, if we need to," said tournament director Peter
German.
"We won't be able to finish on Saturday at St Andrews or
Kingsbarns but we may at Carnoustie.
"We hope to get the third round completed around lunchtime
Sunday and then start the final round Sunday afternoon.
"But whether we get four rounds in is in the lap of the
gods."
Overnight leader Paul McGinley, playing at Carnoustie,
stretched his two-shot advantage to three for a 14-under-par score.
Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone double-bogeyed the second hole
and Englishman Brian Davis double-bogeyed the 11th to allow Jamie Donaldson to
leap into second.
The tournament has seen celebrities such as Hugh Grant,
Samuel L Jackson and Michael Douglas paired up with golf's top
professionals.
It is worth remembering that the road to Kingsbarns beach
should re-open to traffic on Sunday -according to the closure notice, and the
letter to
residents from IMG.
Any notices still in place will be unofficial.
