Plans revealed for resort at Fife estate

The Courier, 7 July 2008

Plans have been unveiled for the centuries-old Cambo Estate, near Kingsbarns, which could lead to the creation of a global resort.

Sir Peter Erskine, who is the sixth Baronet of Cambo and landlord to the Kingsbarns golf links which is the venue each year for the Dunhill Links Championship, has announced his intention to develop Cambo Farm steading into unique visitor accommodation.

He said yesterday, “We are excited about extending Cambo Estate’s history of sympathetic and high standard improvements and thereby further enhancing its already considerable reputation.”

The estate is renowned for its Scottish snowdrop festival, its golf course, stunning gardens and one of the most amazing family homes where they welcome guests and provide accommodation.

Sir Peter said Cambo Farm steading is large enough to house a variety of accommodation.

He continued, “The estate is looking for a significant partner to join this venture as these atmospheric, vernacular buildings deserve the same blend of passion and long term commitment that went into creation of the Kingsbarns golf links and other improvements on the 1200-acre estate.

“By restoring these wonderful buildings the Erskine family intends to avoid the temptation of over development and becoming just another new build five-star luxury golf complex.”

At the same time, the Erskines are planning the process of handing over the estate to the next generation.

The jewel of the estate is the 34-plus bedroom Cambo House—offering unique mansion house style accommodation.

Sir Peter and his wife, Lady Catherine, feel they have taken the house as far as possible in the direction of serviced accommodation without taking the quantum leap to developing a full-scale hotel.

He added, “The next step is very much up to the next generation but the handover would be the time to add another partner to the mix.

“So the family is also exploring the possibilities of finding a suitable partner with the sensitivity, flair and passion to share their vision of taking Cambo House forward.

“We are looking for a partner for each project, either individually or together, to share our vision of creating a truly unique global resort on Cambo Estate, interweaving the centuries of our history into the foundations for the future.”
