Coastline

J Nicholson, Letter to Editor, The Citizen, 24 July 1998

Has anyone else noticed that the countryside around Crail and Kingsbarns is rapidly being ruined?

The new golf course at Balcomie has rendered the wild life sanctuary there as meaningless.

The golf course at Kingsbarns has destroyed the isolated and peaceful atmosphere of the beautiful beach - and that’s before any golfers have ever placed their feet there.

It is no longer possible to walk to the beach at Pitmillie via Hillhead - signs have been erected marking the road as private.

A farmer in Crail has forbidden people from walking on the tracks surrounding his fields and is trying once more to stop access to the coastal path via his land.

Finally, and most importantly, there are the plans for Crail Airfield. These will alter the character of the village and the countryside forever, if they go ahead.

It seems to me that the coastline of Fife shall soon be one long golf course. There are, however, people who do not play golf - is the countryside not there for us all to enjoy?

A select group of people are destroying the area for their own gain and no one seems to be doing a thing about it.

It makes me weep.
